2019 Baldwinsville graduate Jacob Marshall entered the transfer portal earlier this summer and, after a number of Division I offers, committed to play his remaining years with Rutgers University, out of the Big Ten Conference.
Marshall was a key member of the 2018 Baldwinsville team that went to the state finals. In 2019, Marshall was the MVP of the Bees team, going 5-1 in 43.1 innings, with 58 strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA.
As a result, Marshall committed to LeMoyne College, a Division II program, out of high school. After an abbreviated 2020 season due to COVID, Marshall pitched sparingly in 2021. Then, in 2022, Marshall exploded on the scene as LeMoyne's ace.
In 2022, Marshall went 6-3 with three shutouts and five complete games (7 innings). In 85.1 innings pitched, he had 108 strikeouts and held hitters to a .216 batting average.
This resulted in several postseason awards: Northeast-10 First Team All-Conference; Northeast-10 Southwest Division Pitcher of the Year; NCBWA East All-Region, 2nd team; and ABCA/Rawlings Division II All-Region, First Team.
After entering the portal and pitching for the Sanford Mainers in the New England Collegiate Baseball League, Marshall began receiving offers before deciding on a scholarship offer from Rutgers University.
Because of the COVID year, Marshall has two years of eligibility remaining, and he expects to be in the running as a starting pitcher in the Scarlet Knights' rotation.
Head coach Steve Owens said the following about Jake in a press release: "Jake has put together an impressive season of work so far. When he entered the portal, we were able to evaluate him as a starting pitcher against very good competition in the NECBL. He is a talented pitcher with a three-pitch mix who gets a ton of ground balls on his fastball. He fields his position well, controls the running game and has a mature approach to his work. We are excited to have him with us to help the team and we look forward to assisting him with his individual goals."
Interestingly, Jake's transfer to Rutgers potentially puts him up against another Bees graduate and starting pitcher Jason Savacool who attends Maryland, also in the Big Ten. Could they match up against each other? We will see!
Rutgers travels to Maryland on April 7-9 this season. Plan your travel to see these two Bees standouts show their stuff.
