Hot Bats & a Triple Play Propel Bees to Defeat FM
5/1/2015by C. Savacool

After several games where the Bees' offense has been lacking, the Baldwinsville varsity team broke out their bats for 16 hits to beat back Fayetteville-Manlius, 13-2, on Friday.

A number of players had multiple-hit games, as Pat Dubiel, David Marsell, and Andrew Chajkowski each had three hits and Billy Clifford had two.  Charlie McAllister finished with three RBIs.

After going down 2-0 in the first inning, the Bees responded in the third inning with three runs, as Dubiel led off with a single, and with one out, Marsell, Chajkowski, and McAllister followed with consecutive singles, McAllister's bringing in two runs.  Clifford then brought in a run with a sacrifice fly to left field, as the Bees took a 3-2 lead.

But the Bees were not done.  In the fourth inning, Baldwinsville sent 11 batters to the plate, as the team tacked on six more runs for a 9-2 lead.

It started with Danny Engels, who walked, followed by a single by Sam Mahar.  After Dubiel got out, Anthony May walked and Marsell and Chajkowski followed with RBI singles.  McAllister grounded into a fielder's choice which drove in another run.  Clifford and Engels had doubles in the inning to drive in more runs.

In the meantime, Frank Mayosky, who had taken over the pitching duties from Nick Borek after the first inning, continued to roll, giving up only four hits and no runs and collecting three strikeouts over the remaining six innings.

In the sixth inning, Baldwinsville extended the lead, adding three runs on basehits by Mirizio and Marsell.

In the bottom of the sixth frame, FM got its first two runners on by an error and a basehit.  The next batter grounded to Chajkowski at second base, who flipped the ball to May at second to start the double play.  May threw the ball to Clifford at first, completing the double play.  The FM runner from second base, however, decided to round third and aggressively attempted to score.  Clifford immediately fired the ball to McAllister at home who tagged the runner out for an inning-ending triple play, a rare feat in baseball.

In the final frame, the Bees added one more run, as Alec Brummer walked, advanced to second and third on groundouts, and scored on a single by Carson Hayes.  Keenan Nellis and Dubiel followed with singles, but no other runs scored.
